Become a Foster
Fostering a horse from CTA is a great way to help horses and our organization. We advocate for a dignified retirement for racing thoroughbreds who have raced in Puerto Rico or the surrounding Caribbean Islands.
These horses have given their all to their owners, connections, and racing fans who love and enjoy the sport of kings; and we believe they deserve the same. Our sanctuary horses have all been available for adoption for 6 months or more, but have not been able to find an adopter.
Fostering a sanctuary horse allows us to help more horses in need of retirement from racing.
In some cases, we're able to assist with some of the financial cost of fostering through our sponsorship program. Please connect with us directly to learn more about our foster partnership program
About Adopting or Fostering
Why are these horses considered "sanctuary
These horses can not be ridden, and are not able to move on to other careers, as a result of past racing injuries or wear and tear. Some of our sanctuary horses also have piroplasmosis (a tick-borne disease endemic to the island)which prohibits them from traveling outside of Puerto Rico.
Most of our sanctuary horses do require specialized care, such as therapeutic shoeing or joint supplements. This can add additional costs for owners and should be a consideration.
While these horses can not be ridden or go on to do other sports, we find they have so much to offer. They are great companion or nanny horses, non-ridden therapeutic horses, and even great family pets.
Thoroughbreds are very social, loyal, loving, and yearn to please their humans! We think they are a great addition to any home.
What are the requirements for becoming a foster?
Foster's will need to provide adequate space- with appropriate fencing, and a proper diet, which includes forage and grain or a grain substitute.
Horses must have access to water and shade at all times, and we prefer with another companion.
