Adoption Process

Thank you for your interest in adopting an OTTB (Off The Track Thoroughbred) From Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare, Inc. 

The first step in the process is to complete the pre-adoption application form below.

We will contact you within (2) business days of receiving your application to conduct an interview to determine suitability for selected horse.

Rules for adopting an OTTB from CTA:

  • CTA, Inc horses are NEVER adopted to be raced and/or sent to auction or slaughter.

  • CTA, Inc horses are NEVER adopted to be bred unless under limited agreements outlined in adoption contract.

  • CTA, Inc horses are NEVER adopted to be abused, misused or neglected in any manner.

CTA requires AT LEAST one-week acclimation before any training begins. If a horse is brought back to the States, then the horse may require one month or more. If more time-off or other special instructions are required, adopter must adhere to them. 

CTA or a representative of CTA may conduct “home” visits to see living situation before a horse is adopted if the stabling, farm, barn is unknown to CTA. Also, CTA intends to check on the horse’s welfare after adoption. These may be scheduled or done without notice, and may include CTA volunteers.

Adopter must be willing to provide updates (e.g., pictures, reports) and allow CTA to call equine vet, if desired, throughout that horse’s natural life.

Basic Requirements of Potential Adopter:

  • 21 or older

  • Be physically able to care for horse

  • Have financial means to care for horse for a lifetime

  • NEVER been the subject of any convictions, charges and/or association or suspicion of involvement with any form of animal cruelty, nor placing horse in care of person with such history

  • Have equine knowledge and skills. Experience and/or expertise with retired racehorses is desired

  • Understand use and limits of horses in general, and those of particular horse being adopted

  • Stable area must have paddock or turn out, and horse must be turned out daily unless there are health or other appropriate reason otherwise

  • area must be clean of debris and hazardous materials

  • safe fencing and NO barbwire

  • Horse must have 24/7 access to clean water

  • Horse must be fed good hay/grass and grain on a regular & consistent feeding schedule

  • Must provide consistent and timely routine horse care, including annual vaccinations, dental care, farrier/blacksmith care, and veterinary care as needed

  • At least 3 current references are required

Additional Considerations:

  • Prior OTTB experience

  • Adopted Horse will get 4+ hours of turnout daily

  • Adopted Horse will have at least one other companion (horse) to socialize with during turnout
